Artystka zastanawia się nad tym, w jaki sposób ideały te były promowane zarówno w bloku wschodnim – poprzez oczywistą propagandę, jak i na Zachodzie – poprzez pozornie neutralny język modernistycznego postępu.

The exhibition BETONIUM by Katerina Kouzmitcheva focuses on exploring the relationship between contemporary identity and the architectural heritage of Central and Eastern Europe, concentrating on prefabricated residential blocks used as a tool of both urban and ideological control.
Through the exhibition, the artist seeks to analyze how structures shaped by the politics of former regimes have influenced the collective identity of their inhabitants. Through artistic interventions—including conceptual actions in urban space, photography, performances, and collages—BETONIUM reveals a synthesis of historical and contemporary realities embedded within these environments. Drawing inspiration from sculptures created during the peak era of large-panel housing construction, Kouzmitcheva returns to the notion of “stone idols,” deconstructing political narratives of control and idealization.
The artist reflects on how these ideals were promoted both in the Eastern Bloc—through explicit propaganda—and in the West—through the seemingly neutral language of modernist progress.
The event is part of this year’s Night of Museums and the Poznań Art Week “Territories” program.
